Linfield supporters run riot following cup defeat

Linfield supporters run riot following cup defeat
Supporters of Northern Irish football side Linfield smashed up houses and attacked stewards following a cup defeat by rivals Derry City.

Trouble between fans at the two sides Setanta Sports Cup match last night (March 20th), which Derry won 3-1, began when a group of Linfield supporters broke down the security fencing separating fans at Brandywell Stadium's Showgrounds end whilst being escorted out by police.

There had been reports that a Linfield bus, parked outside the ground, had been attacked by a gang of youths whilst eyewitnesses said that Linfield fans had smashed windows in nearby houses.

Both sides had met earlier in the month to contest the first leg, which finished 1-1, where the atmosphere had been pleasant but the scenes were far less savoury in the return match.

Mark Durkan, Derry's MP, said: "This is all very disappointing. It was great night of football and a great result for Derry City. I am sure the behaviour of these individuals does not reflect the vast majority of Linfield fans."
