Security fencing will be part of improvement works on over 1,000 homes in Hull that have been transferred from the council to a housing association.
The 1,184 properties, on the north Bransholme estate in the city, have gone to The Riverside Group, 24dash.com reported.
Work will begin immediately to improve the homes with the installation of energy efficient gas central heating and boilers.
Over the next five years, security fencing, new kitchens, bathrooms, insulation and external doors will be fitted.
The move sees four per cent of the council's housing stock transferred into private hands.
Approval was needed from the secretary of state for the transfer, with a ballot of Bransholme tenants taking place earlier this year. 56.58 per cent were in favour, 43.42 per cent were against it.
"As a council we want what is best for tenants. The secretary of state's approval of the tenant-led transfer application recognises the many years of hard work undertaken in a partnership between the United Residents of North Bransholme (URBaN) and Hull City Council to regenerate the estate and improve homes," councillor Rick Welton, portfolio holder for regeneration and housing strategy, was quoted by the website as saying.
Recently, members of the building industry welcomed the scrapping of building proposals for new-build homes. The proposals could have meant developers would have had to spend thousands of extra pounds to see projects through.
