Greater demand for security fencing may soon be seen across Essex, as the county's police force reports a significant recent cable theft.

Thieves caused £150,000 worth of damage in the early hours of November 8th, leaving hundreds of local homes and businesses having without telephone and broadband services.

Not only did they tamper with over 1,000 metres of cable, but also removed 300 metres of the much-needed lines from the scene.

Leader of operations against metal thieves Superintendent Mark Wheeler said the cable would likely have been cut into smaller lengths for easy transportation.

He also suggested several vehicles would have been on the scene, "one of which might have been towing a trailer carrying a heavy duty winch which would have been used to haul the very thick and heavy cable out of the underground ducts".

People living in rural areas are asked to get in touch with the police if they hear any suspicious machinery in operation during the night.
