A number of security gates aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour in Stoke-on-Trent are under threat due to a lack of funds at the council.
The six metal structures which have been placed in alleyways in Palmers Green, Hartshill, will no longer be opened and closed by contractors from April. It is due to a number of cutbacks at the city's council which has forced this decision.
Whilst similar gates in Burnley have been commended for reducing the amount of crime by half, Stoke residents are now being consulted on the future of the metal barriers.
There is the option to lock them permanently or for members of the Hartshill and Harpfields Residents' Association to open and close gates themselves.
Barbara Andrew, leader of the organisation, told The Sentinel: "We are looking to the council to come up with a solution which is satisfactory to all parties. This has gone on for far too long and it should be finalised. People are fed up with it."
