Travelodge has announced a major expansion project that will see the creation of 15 new hotels across the UK.
The low cost hospitality chain will invest £100 million to build new premises in key city centre locations around the country. Five will be situated in London while the likes of Manchester, Glasgow, Southampton, Llandudno, Harrogate and Ryde on the Isle of Wight are among Travelodge's plans. The company is aiming to break into the city centre market and away from its traditional roadside hotels and will see the network grow to over 519 premises.
London has been seen as a key location with Travelodge looking to build on the 65 hotels it already boasts in the capital. With an influx of tourists coming into London on a daily basis a lot will be looking for affordable hotels and this is where Travelodge can come in and offer a reasonable rate for a short stay.
The company stated that on top of the expansion plans it will also be continuing with its modernisation programme for its current portfolio of hotels. A further 11,800 guest bedrooms are due to be renovated at a cost of £37 million, this is aimed at improving the service for visitors and ensure it can compete with the likes of Premier Inn and Ibis.
Peter Gowers, Travelodge chief executive, said: ”2014 marks the next stage on our journey to build a new Travelodge that is Britain’s favourite hotel for value.
“During the last year we modernised more than 200 of our hotels across the country and we are on schedule to transform the majority of our portfolio by this autumn."
The chosen locations in Manchester and Glasgow provides Travelodge with two of the busiest places in the respective city. In Manchester, the hotel will be built next to Piccadilly station giving travellers a place to stay before heading off while in Glasgow the Travelodge will be located on Queen Street, again next to one of the city's train stations.
