Balfour Beatty has secured a contract to reconfigure the roof of the Olympic stadium in Stratford, London.
The £41 million agreemen will see the roof being transformed so it is ready for legacy use in the future. On the one-year anniversary of the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games the government has reinforced its commitment to creating a lasting sporting legacy throughout the country for years to come. Balfour Beatty stated that the reconfiguring will include dismantling and removing the existing roof and floodlight towers in order to support the new roof.
An extensive cable net system construction will be introduced and the actual roof will be put together on the floor of the stadium before being winched into position. This will be made possible with the use of a number of 600 tonne cranes helping to lift the steelwork into place. The work will bring the stadium up to scratch prior to its change of use in the years to come.
Stadium architect Populous explained that the new roof will provide cover for football fans sitting above the existing running track when West Ham United takeover the Olympic stadium in 2016. The Premier League club managed to beat off competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient to secure the rights to playing in the ground.
It will represent a significant upgrade on the capacity of their current Upton Park home which is only capable of holding just over 35,000 spectators. The Olympic Stadium will almost double this capacity. Building.co.uk reported in March that five firms are in the running to secure the £100 million contract to convert the stadium for football use, one of which is Balfour Beatty.
Andrew McNaughton, Balfour Beatty chief executive, said: “This award enables us to continue to develop our role in the London 2012 Olympic legacy. Our utilisation of leading Building Information Modelling techniques has allowed us to develop a bespoke construction methodology that will reduce the programme risk to this technically challenging scheme."
