The government has stayed true on its promise to significantly improve the road network across England.

Ministers have unveiled a £28 billion investment programme to be spread over the next six years which will help to make major upgrades of motorways and other roads across the country. The initiative includes introducing reforms aimed at tackling a "decade of underestimated in roads" which will be backed up by legislation. Around £500 million will be made available for electric vehicles and a further £12 billion for road maintenance and resurfacing.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin explained that the £28 billion will represent a trebling of funding for motorways and major A-roads, and become the biggest ever upgrade of the existing network. With millions of Brits being caught up in congestion on a daily basis, the government is focusing on how to reduce the potential for traffic jams while decreasing the environmental impact of the roads.

As part of the proposals there will be 221 extra lane miles of managed motorway which will link existing routes between the north-west, Birmingham and London. Over 50 major projects will be made possible through funding will be available for further enhancements. The £12 billion earmarked for road maintenance will account for resurfacing 80 per cent of the nation's motorways and major A-roads by 2020.

Mr McLoughlin said: "Our major roads are vital to the prosperity of our nation, connecting people to jobs and businesses to markets. They carry a third of all traffic and two thirds of all freight traffic but in recent decades we have failed to invest properly in them."

The government has been heavily focused on improving England's infrastructure and is pushing ahead with plans for HS2. The high-speed rail network is to dramatically slash journey times between the north of England and London. The project will involve a number of new stations being constructed in Leeds, London, Sheffield and Manchester among other cities.
