London City Airport is looking to expand its current confines and has submitted plans to Newham Council.
The airport, situated in the Docklands area of the capital, is aiming to add an extra 50,000 flights each year allowing six million more passengers to use the facility. Officials explained that the £200 million investment which will bring these plans to fruition will see bigger parking stands, meaning that bigger aircraft can use the facility. These proposals are hoped to be brought in by 2016.
London City Airport is currently the 15th busiest airport in the UK and is regarded more of a facility to be used by business passengers. It's current confines means that it only tends to be used by smaller airlines such as CityJet, BA CityFlyer, Lufthansa CityLine and Swiss European Air Lines, which are short-haul aircraft subsidiaries of major carriers.
Officials added that the expansion is needed as morning and evening business flights are nearing capacity and are due to increase in the future. As major development projects accelerate in east London, the airport will be required on a much more regular basis. Due to its location it can be easily accessible from the heart of the capital compared to the likes of Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted which lie on the outskirts of the city.
Declan Collier, chief executive of the airport, said: "Increasingly, this area is a focus for foreign investment - the recent announcement by ABP of its intention to build a multi-billion pound business park on Royal Albert Dock is one such example - and the connectivity to business centres across Europe, Eastern Europe and the Middle East that the airport provides, or will provide in the future, is central to this continuing."
Despite the expansion plans, there are no proposals in place to extend the runway but the terminal building will be extended and refurbished.
