Galliford Try to revamp The Mailbox

Galliford Try to revamp The Mailbox
The Mailbox in Birmingham is set for a significant revamp after Galliford Try was awarded a renovation contract for the shopping centre.

Galliford Try held off competition from the likes of Brookfield Multiplex, Bowmer & Kirkland and McLaren Construction to secure the £50 million project, Construction Enquirer reports. The work will span two years creating a new roof, larger public areas and upgrading the surrounding infrastructure. It is hoped that it will give the shopping centre a substantial shot in the arm after stagnating recently.

Opened as a site for high end shops, The Mailbox appealed to the wealthier shopper compared to Birmingham's other major shopping centre, The Bull Ring. In May 2013, it was announced that Milligan Retail would be conducting a large renovation of the development which was to be designed by Stanton Williams. One of the main changes would the creation of a new Harvey Nichols store, spreading over 45,000 sq ft.

Alongside the creation of a new signature department shop, The Mailbox has also secured a deal with Everyman Cinemas. It is the company's first cinema in the Midlands and will see a three-screen theatre opened in the latter stages of 2014. Everyman recently opened its first site outside of London and the south of England when it moved into the new Trinity shopping centre in Leeds.

Milligan Retail and site owners Brockton Capital have confirmed that with the introduction of a new roof it will make The Mailbox fully enclosed and sky lit. This is designed to create an urban room with new facades.

Officials have earmarked the end of 2015 for a completion date when the development will be re-opened to the public and bring one of Birmingham's major landmarks back to its former glory. Galliford Try is expected to begin work on the site in the coming weeks.
