John Lewis store to open at Westfield

John Lewis store to open at Westfield
A new John Lewis department is set to be the focal point of a major renovation project at Westfield shopping centre in Shepherds Bush, London.

The flagship outlet will cover 230,000 sq ft and form a large section of the £1 billion extension of the site. Australian owners of Westfield announced the deal in Sydney last night (November 12th) bringing to an end three years of negotiations with John Lewis to attract one of its stores to the area.

Westfield stated that the department store will cost around £30 million to create and will generate around 600 jobs which will be focused towards members of the local community. It is set to be one of the biggest John Lewis stores in the UK, spreading across four floors and will have enough stock for over 350,000 lines in departments.

John Lewis has been rapidly expanding across the country and recently secured a spot in the new Victoria Gate development in Leeds. The West Yorkshire city has been expanding its retail opportunities with the opening of Trinity and this latest project will see it open up even more shopping options for consumers.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Andy Street, managing director John Lewis, said: "Our business in London has strengthened significantly over recent years. It is therefore right that we now move to open in Westfield London and bring our offer to customers in the west of the city."

The Westfield expansion is not just focused solely on shoppers as the Australian company has committed £20 million for community improvements. This will include £3.9 million to improve Shepherds Bush overground train station which will be able to accommodate the increase in commuter footfall to the area.

A giant regeneration scheme of the area will see 1,500 homes created in five high-rise blocks over the next 15 years.
