Glasgow's Fort shopping centre is set to undergo a major renovation after officials approved a £9 million expansion project with the aim of providing an improved service for consumers in Scotland's second city.

The retail park is situated six miles outside of Glasgow's city centre, just off the M8 near Easterhouse, and provides shoppers with a plethora of high street stores all under one roof and the latest work will see this improved even further.

Officials behind the project noted that it will encompass a 45,000 sq ft expansion and is set to create 200 jobs within the centre as well as a further 250 construction positions for the building of the new development.

Work will start at the beginning of next week (August 27th) with an expected opening date set for summer 2013. The completed structure will house some of the most popular entertainment and restaurant outlets with the likes of TGI Friday, Harvester, Pizza Express, Prezzo Italian and Chiquito Mexican already confirmed as being housed within the expansion. Shoppers will also be able to take a break from their retail therapy to relax and enjoy a movie at the new eight-screen Vue cinema.

Construction firm Miller has been selected to take on the job that will help to provide a major boost to the Glasgow Fort development, which was originally built in 2004 and currently employs 2,000 members of staff across 90 retailers, within its confines.

Calum Graham, chief executive of Glasgow Regeneration Agency (GRA), said: "This announcement of a new cinema and leisure facilities at Glasgow Fort is excellent news for residents, who are facing major challenges in accessing the labour market.

"GRA is delighted to be working with Glasgow Fort to offer fantastic employment and training opportunities at the new development to so many people."

This latest move sees Glasgow become the latest city to invest heavily into its retail sector, following in the footsteps of the likes of Leeds, which is currently in the midst of building the major Trinity development in the city centre.
