Sports netting looks likely to be installed in Banstead in the coming years if plans for a new leisure centre get the go ahead.

Around £6.6 million has been earmarked for the project, which would see a new 25-metre swimming pool and sports hall among the facilities constructed.

Furthermore, the project - a part of the Merland Rise development - will include a 50-station fitness gym, 30-person exercise and dance studio as well as a cafeteria and creche facilities, the Epsom Guardian reports.

Reigate and Banstead Councillor Adam De Save, executive member for healthy communities, told the news provider that the council has listened to "what is important local residents".

He added: "Our significant investment in improving leisure facilities across the borough, despite the difficult economic climate and constraints of the council's budget, demonstrates our commitment to helping residents' live healthy and active lifestyles."

Sports netting could also be required in Portsmouth after plans for a new £1.4 million leisure centre were unveiled.
