Play area fencing will be installed at Long Meadow in Barton-on-Sea after a long battle between residents and parents was concluded.

New Milton Town Council has given planning approval for the site to have a playground installed, following a 100-people-strong demonstration in February, reports the Bournemouth Echo.

The Friends of Long Meadow group, however, claims that the first public consultation in 2007 found that 90 per cent of people were against the plans.

Despite this, parent Stuart Press told the news provider that his son is "absolutely over the moon".

"But the people against it are trying to take the council to court because they said it hasn't been handled properly," he explained.

"This has been going on for a long time. There’s so many people against it but I think that’s only because it backs on to them."

Meanwhile, Berrow's play area fencing was given a prize because of its quality by the Somerset Playing Fields Association for the second year running.
