New metal railings could be among the improvements made to the shopping area in Leicester after the local council revealed investment will be made in the area.

Around £600,000 has been set aside to help improve shopping areas and gateways, in addition to improving signage and the front of shops.

Furthermore, the council will also consult local residents and traders about more long-term improvements, including better parking and transport facilities, reports the Leicester Mercury.

Sir Peter Soulsby, the mayor of Leicester, told the news provider that the move [[isit]] to make sure independent traders are helped out.

"Independent shops are a key part of the variety needed to ensure Leicester's neighbourhood shopping areas and city centre are truly thriving shopping destinations," he said.

"It is vital to ensure independent traders get the support and help they need."

Lincoln will also be seeing a new retailer in the Bailsgate area after a new tea room was opened in the area.
