Oxford may be the city in greatest need of traffic barriers, as figures show that congestion levels have increased higher than anywhere else in the UK.

Research from TomTom shows that the city has risen from sixth to third place, indicating that 31.2 per cent of its roads are clogged up with traffic.

Belfast has witnessed the second-largest congestion increase, followed by Bolton, Southampton and Sheffield.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, London topped the list of the areas most affected by heavy traffic, with Edinburgh ranking in second position.

A TomTom spokesman commented: "Many people may be surprised to find that places like Oxford, Belfast and Bolton have suffered big increases in levels of traffic congestion."

Lancashire County Council has recently taken tough action on people in the area who do not keep an eye out for parking barriers and instead leave their cars wherever they like.

This causes disruption for other motorists and pedestrians, who are unable to navigate pavements safely.
