Tesco will install parking barriers and other fencing measures in Whitehaven in the next couple of years after announcing it will build a new store in the area.

Around 150 new jobs will be created at the £20 million superstore, giving locals access to even more of the chain's products.

The News & Star reports that while the superstore will be built on stilts, a car park featuring parking barriers will be situated underneath.

Doug Wilson, head of corporate affairs for Tesco, told the news provider that plans to build in the area are "absolutely definite" adding that the area is just right.

"We have ownership of a lot of the development site already and all in all it's an investment in excess of £20million, including the roadworks," he said.

"And what a fantastic location – we've looked at all the aspects, the planned spaces and square, and designed the new store with the harbour and all the wonderful views in mind as well."

Tesco already has more than 5,380 stores across the world.
