Pedestrian guardrails to replace zebra crossings?

Pedestrian guardrails to replace zebra crossings?
Pedestrian guardrails could soon feature more heavily throughout the UK, as experts believe that zebra crossings may be on their way out.

This is mainly because they were originally installed when people had more time to waste, but hectic everyday lives have made them hazardous, explained the AA.

"In towns and villages, there is a pressure from residents for councils to fit pelican crossings as they believe they are safer, so zebras are being phased out," explained Andrew Hammond, head of road safety at the AA.

He noted that zebra crossings are generally considered as being inferior, mainly because they do not have any lights or other features that tell cars to stop.

As a result, Mr Hammond expressed that he believes they will soon become extinct in UK towns and villages.

Figures show that five people died on zebra crossings last year, while 144 were seriously hurt. This compares to three deaths back in 2006.
