Security fencing is to be put up at two play areas in Batley after the council granted funds for renovation of the sites.

Batley and Birstall News reported that residents living near the Woodsome Estate area had asked councillors for funds to improve the children's play area, as well as extending the fencing to include a kick-around facility.

The Batley, Birstall and Birkenshaw Area Committee will provide £8,000 towards the improvement project. It is hoped that the new fencing will minimise children getting hurt by stray footballs. The council has also announced a £16,000 grant to help improve to the play area on Grafton Street near Warwick Road.

It is believed the money will go towards replacing the play equipment, which is 15 years old and not suitable anymore.

Playgrounds across the country are being re-developed as children in Buckingham attended the opening of a play area which had gone under a £70,000 renovation which was heralded as a "fantastic facility for local children".
