Roadside security fencing is not being ruled out by councillors in Colchester following the death of teenager Cassie McCord.
The 16-year-old was hit by a car in Head Street after the vehicle mounted the curb.
While senior councillor Tim Young, member for community safety at Colchester Borough Council, said he didn't want a knee-jerk reaction to the incident, he did not rule out the installation of roadside security fencing.
He was reported by the East Anglian Daily Telegraph as saying: "If there was demand and the evidence proved it was necessary I would not rule it out."
"We were considering something similar in the High Street, but the rules and regulations from the county council wanted to rid the streets of clutter," he added.
The driver of the vehicle in question was 87 years old and was believed to have suffered a heart attack, police told the news provider.
Recently, campaigners in Cambridgeshire called on the council to review the decision not to install crash barriers at a riverside road in Fenland.
