Schools in Cumbria have welcomed the council's move to calm traffic in the area, making it safer for children.
The Westmorland Gazette reported that teachers at Cartmel Priory CE School and Cartmel Primary School had to watch as children left the steel gates to make sure they were safe.
Now Cumbria County Council has introduced two new 20mph zones around the schools as well as installing flashing lights in a bid to improve safety in the area.
The plans are set to cost the council £12,000 and were announced at a recent public meeting.
Paul Williams, head teacher of Cartmel Priory CE School, told the source: "The traffic situation outside both schools in Cartmel is of huge concern and has been for a number of years. A couple of years ago a teacher was in an accident and needed airlifting to hospital and, while nothing has ever happened to a pupil, we are constantly looking out for them when they are crossing the road."
