The installation of security fencing is high up on the agenda for the Highways Agency in several locations across the country, as road accidents involving deer peak at this time of year.

Statistics from the body show that the annual toll of deer vehicle collisions in Britain may soon exceed 42,500 and has the potential to become as high as 74,000.

Nearly 80 per cent of all recorded incidents occur in England, which the Highways Agency believes needs to be addressed.

CCTV images show that deer will walk calmly within just two to six metres of passing trunk road traffic.

It has come up with a number of ways to reduce the problem, such as through erecting security fencing that will encourage the animals away from main trunk carriages.

An assessment of the situation underlines that there are a number of low cost solutions that can be adopted by the agency to protect both road users and wildlife.
