Security fencing has been erected around a village cricket club to keep stray horses and bikes off the pitch.
The perimeter fencing at Hunwick Cricket Club in Durham was built with the support of Durham County Council which supported the club in its aims to keep the pitch free from outside interference, reported the Northern Echo.
A huge amount of money was raised not just for the fencing but to help the club secure the lease for the ground as well as developing the junior section.
Two councillors contributed £5,000 each from their respective budgets, the Co-operative Membership Fund granted £1,000, the County Durham Foundation gave £1,300 and the Three Towns Area Action Partnership (AAP) donated £3,000.
Steve Howell, the county council’s head of sport and leisure, said that they were committed to helping community clubs manage their own facilities.
He added: "These clubs may find self-management rewarding as this can open up the possibility of accessing external funding streams. The Hunwick project is a prime example of how we can all benefit from such activities."
An official ceremony was held to mark the completion of the security fencing, followed by a round-robin tournament.
Mesh sports fencing is to be included at the proposed site of a modern training centre in Huddersfield.
