Vital sports fencing around a popular BMX track in the West Midlands has been destroyed by vandals causing £600 worth of damage.

The metal sports fencing at the £20,000 state-of-the-art track was found to have been torn down, reported Dudley News.

Bryan Cotterill, a Dudley Wood councillor, who had campaigned for the track to be developed to give children and young people in the area something to do, said it was a "mindless and selfish" act of vandalism.

Speaking to the newspaper, he said: "The money which we are having to spend to repair it is preventing the money being spent on providing other facilities in the ward."

The track was opened up in 2009 and has proved to be extremely popular with up to 100 children and young people using it on a regular basis.

Last year vandals destroyed inadequate security fencing at a sports pavilion in Scunthorpe, highlighting the importance of erecting high security fencing.
