A brand new set of "glimmering" security gates installed on Roker Pier, Sunderland, have been heralded as a great success by a city councillor.

The area's authority took the decision to take down the old "prison-like" gates as well as the old iron fencing and in their place are a set of polished stainless steel access systems that have reinvigorated the Grade II-listed pier.

In 2009, CABE Sea Change Fund granted the council £1 million to update Roker's Marine Walk and £75,000 was used to create the gate replacement project. Councillors have said that the gates are designed to create an optical illusion mirroring the waves.

Councillor John Kelly, portfolio holder for Safer City and Culture, said: "We've certainly had our challenges with the weather, but now the gates are in place they really do look fantastic, especially when the sun reflects off the glass. People who took part in the consultation were really enthusiastic about new gates to improve the appearance of the pier."

Roker Pier has been an iconic landmark in Sunderland since its construction in 1885 and is a hotspot for local fishermen.
