Security fencing has been breached by thieves in the London borough of Sutton, who were apparently determined to get their hands on copper earthing cables.

The theft was made from an electricity substation in Reigate Avenue in Sutton sometime between October 13th and 19th.

Eight-foot security fencing surrounds the UK Power Networks substation, which has left the owners wondering how the thieves managed to break in.

It appears that the offenders even risked being electrocuted in order to obtain the metal, reveals This is London.

A technician first discovered the theft after visiting the substation on October 19th and the previous visit had been performed six days earlier.

Greater Manchester Police was recently involved in a national clampdown on metal thefts, which involved scrapyards being visited and vehicles with unusual loads being stopped.

Metal thefts have increased over recent months due to the rising cost of scrap metal.
