Three traffic barriers filled with water have been erected in Alfriston in East Sussex to improve safety on a narrow road.
East Sussex Council has put up the temporary traffic barriers, which have been labelled an "innovative form of traffic calming", to encourage drivers to give way to oncoming traffic and deter them from mounting onto the pavement.
It comes after residents had expressed concerns over damage caused to pavements and medieval buildings and the danger cars presented to people walking by foot.
Carl Maynard, councillor and lead cabinet member for economy, transport and environment said: "We have been working with SAFE and the Parish Council to help find a way forward. By putting in these temporary barriers we can see whether they are effective and, if they are, we can put in a more permanent version."
This is part of a wider initiative from the council, which, along with Save Alfriston for Everyone (SAFE) and the Parish Council, is working on generating solutions to the problems caused by traffic throughout the village. It is funded by English Heritage.
A local resident from Northumberland recently highlighted the need for traffic barriers at Holy Island to put an end to drivers being caught in the tide.
