Gates introduced to close traffic on a busy junction at the weekends in Scunthorpe have been deemed a success one year on.
The barriers on Britannia Corner, which restricts traffic on Friday and Saturday nights, has received widespread acclaim from the community at large, reported This is Scunthorpe.
Previously known for being an extremely busy and dangerous area for both motorists and pedestrians, the gates were permanently introduced 12 months ago to cut down accidents and improve the safety of people enjoying the thriving nightlife.
It has led to the police being better able to deal with public order problems, an improved taxi service, and a much safer area for people to visit in the evenings.
North Lincolnshire Council, which was responsible for the development after conducting a successful trial in August 2009 said that the scheme had achieved all its objectives: "These were to improve road safety, manage the parking of taxis more effectively, improve the management of public order and enhance the experience for visitors to the area on Friday and Saturday night."
Altogether, the capital cost of the scheme was approximately £27,000.
