Cardiff City have gained approval to increase capacity at the Cardiff City Stadium.
The Bluebirds want to expand the ground to accommodate 33,000 supporters to meet the demands of the Premier League and to host Welsh international games. The additional 5,150 seats will be added to the Ninian Park stand while there will also be the creation of a new VIP area, WalesOnline reports.
Cardiff council's planning committee gave the green light to the project which is expected to generate £31 million for the local economy. The club believes that now is the right time to begin the work so they can capitalise on the Premier League status Cardiff currently find themselves in.
However, there had been concerns over match-day parking but the club is set to make £1,000 contribution for every home game to fund more civic parking enforcement officers.
Not only will the expansion benefit Cardiff City and Wales but it will also prove a muc more attractive proposition when the stadium holds the European Super Cup, a match between the winners of this season's Champions League and Europa League in August 2014. With this in mind it is expected that construction will begin immediately
Richard Cook, Canton councillor, told the news provider: "We support the club and welcome the economic development this will bring, but that must not be at the expense of the majority of residents of the city who do not support or appreciate football."
There is the potential that Cardiff could eventually expand the ground to a 50,000-seater and Butetown Labour councillor Ali Ahmed believes that should something like this come to pass it could make a huge difference to the area.
On the pitch Cardiff have adapted to life in the Premier League relatively well; they currently lie 14th and have amassed eight points from their first seven games. This has included a famous 3-2 victory over Manchester City at the Cardiff City Stadium.
