Cardiff City to build new VIP area in stadium expansion

Cardiff City to build new VIP area in stadium expansion
Cardiff City are planning to create a new VIP area as part of the expansion of the Cardiff City Stadium.

The Welsh club, which were promoted to the Premier League last season, are aiming to accommodate up to 250 guests with seating on the halfway line as part of the new Premier Club facility. A planning application has been submitted to Cardiff council and is in line with the overall expansion proposals which will see the overall capacity extended to 33,000, WalesOnline reports.

Cardiff's level four premium concourse will be accessed by a specially created entrance in the new extension which will be kitted out with its own reception, stairs, life and open bar and lounge area. Officials explained that the expansion plans will focus on the Ninian Park stand where an additional 5,150 seats will be added. It will allow Cardiff to compete with the rest of the Premier League in terms of matchday revenue.

The Cardiff City Stadium currently has one of the lowest capacities in England's top division with only the likes of Hull, Fulham, Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and near neighbours Swansea having smaller grounds. Club officials believe that the expansion will help Cardiff generate more funds and attract more VIP guests to the stadium during the season.

Jessica Jones, from consultants Arup, told the news provider: "Initial feedback from the tendering contractors has reinforced that the timescale is deliverable, but require the earliest possible start on site to have any chance of achieving practical completion in readiness for the 2014/15 season."

The work is set to create a considerable boost for the construction sector with 330 jobs being created and £31 million being contributed to the local economy. Once completed an extra four full-time and 100 part-time jobs will be made available.

Cardiff City Stadium is also set to be host of the 2014/15 European Super Cup, a match between this season's UEFA Champions League and Europa League winners, and officials have reassured fans that the expansion will be ready in time.
