The saga over Liverpool FC's future stadium could be nearing an end as the club is believed to be close to submitting a planning application.
There has been ongoing discussions between club officials and the council of where the Merseyside team could relocate to if they were to leave Anfield. There had been a number of suggestions including moving to Speke, building a new ground on the nearby Stanley Park and even a groundshare with local rivals Everton. However, the club now looks set on renovating their current ground.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds are set to submit an application to Liverpool City Council for a £150 million redevelopment before the start of next season. The news provider understands that only "a handful" of the 90 houses needed to be demolished to fulfill the plans have yet to be purchased.
Following discussions between the club, the council and social housing developer Your Housing Group significant progress has been made in terms of negotiating with residents and Liverpool are confident that the remaining properties will be acquired over the next two months. After the homes have been bought, the club will push forward to increase capacity on the Main Stand and the Anfield Road end meaning the ground will able to house 60,000 supporters.
Ian Ayre, managing director of Liverpool, told the source: "Our goal is to extend Anfield. But we need certainty and that comes with the acquisition of properties."
Real progress has been made in acquiring them. Once they have all been acquired we will go through the planning process. We would expect to be in a position to make that a certainty this summer. Once planning has been achieved then we can start construction."
Despite being one of the most recognised football clubs in the world, Liverpool still manages to fall way behind its competitors in terms of stadium capacity. In England alone, the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Sunderland all boast larger stadiums allowing them to boost revenues through larger attendances.
