Manchester City have unveiled plans to expand the Etihad Stadium.
Images published in the Manchester Evening News (MEN) show how the former Premier League champions plan to add a further 13,500 seats taking the capacity from the current 48,000 to around 61,500. This renovation will make the ground the second largest club stadium in the UK behind near neighbours Manchester United's Old Trafford, which holds just over 75,000.
The pictures obtained by the newspaper show that City are planning to build an extra tier around the other two stands of the Etihad. Currently the East Stand and the Colin Bell West Stand have three tiers but this is expected to be extended to both the North Stand and South Stand, the latter accommodates away supporters as well. It is believed that City will apply to Manchester council for planning permission next month.
A spokesperson for the club told the MEN: "Visitors have been able to drop-in to a permanent exhibition space at the Etihad Stadium, enabling people to ask questions, fill out questionnaires and make recommendations. The exhibition is being updated and will re-open on October 17th to provide further information on the planning application."
Since the club's move from Maine Road in 2003, one complaint raised among supporters has been the inability to have groups of fans sit together. With this in mind, City are offering their 36,000 current season card holder the opportunity to buy four more season cards for friends and family. This will allow groups to once again sit together.
On the pitch the Blues have been staking their claim to regain the Premier League title under the guidance of new manager Manuel Pellegrini. They currently lie fifth in the table and enjoyed a dominant 4-1 win over rivals Manchester United in September. However, they were recently outclassed in the Champions League by German side Bayern Munich who won 3-1 at the Etihad.
