The Rotherham United chief operating officer (COO) has described talk of a stadium expansion as "incredible" following the club's promotion to League One.

Paul Douglas explained to The Star that he has already had people coming up to him asking whether the club were planning on increasing the capacity of the New York Stadium from its current level. The ground can hold 12,000 supporters and Rotherham have sold out on four different occasions during their League Two campaign. They could have even shifted a couple hundred more for the final game against Aldershot which sealed promotion.

While there is a renewed optimism around the south Yorkshire team, Mr Douglas explains that it was not long ago when they were playing in front of 2,500 at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield.

Rotherham have been somewhat of a nomadic team over the past few years after leaving Millmoor, their home for 101 years, in 2008. Since the construction of a community stadium in Rotherham was still ongoing, The Millers played at the Don Valley between the 2008/9 and 2011/12 seasons.

New York Stadium was opened at the beginning of the 2012/13 campaign and has been heralded as a huge success. The ground sits a stone's throw from the centre of Rotherham and, coupled with strong performance of the team on the pitch, has seen attendance double over the course of the season. It has led to some supporters questioning whether it could be expanded from its current 12,000-seat confines.

Mr Douglas told the news provider: “People have asked about future expansion and if there are any plans for increasing the size one day and the answer is that the facility is in place, if required, to move up to 16,000."

“But what is incredible is even mentioning about expanding a 12,000-seater stadium when you consider where this club was not so long ago."

Rotherham will start next season in League One pitting their wits against teams such as Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City as well as near neighbour Sheffield United.
