Scunthorpe United unveils plans for Iron Arena

Scunthorpe United unveils plans for Iron Arena
Scunthorpe United have revealed plans for a move away from their Glanford Park home and into a new stadium.

The League Two club unveiled detailed proposals and images of the 12,000-capacity "Iron Arena", which will form part of a £40 million community leisure development in the town. The stadium would be built near to Glanford Park and has been estimated to cost £18 million, according to Frank Whittle Partnership which drew up the plans.

Scunthorpe are aiming to secure planning permission before the end of the season in May 2014 and hope to be playing in their new home in time for the 2015/16 campaign. Alongside the "Iron Arena", the project will see the creation of a 120-bed hotel, multi-use indoor arena, crown green facilities and community sports pitches.

David Robinson, Frank Whittle Partnership managing partner, said: “We have worked closely with the club to create modern facilities that will be used by members of the community seven days a week, throughout the year, something we believe is vitally important for modern day sports venues."

The Iron have been playing their home games at Glanford Park since 1988 following the move from the Old Showground. While it is still functional for League Two matches it is beginning to shows its age and the club feel that now is the right time to move on.

A number of similar level clubs have taken similar steps in recent years to help prepare themselves should they advance through the leagues. The likes of Chesterfield, Burton Albion and Morecambe have all moved grounds in recent years while Bristol Rovers are currently in the process of relocating from their Memorial Ground home.

Scunthorpe currently sit at the top of League Two, two points clear of second placed Burton and three points clear of Southend United, who occupy fourth place.
