Willmott Dixon has secured its first football stadium project after being selected by Brentford FC to build their new home.
The Bees are looking to relocate from their current Griffin Park ground to a new 20,000-seater stadium. Plans unveiled earlier in the year also include the creation of 910 properties close to Kew Bridge in London while the stadium will be situated at Lionel Road South. Brentford managed to secure planning permission for the ground in December 2013 although they are still waiting on approval from Mayor of London Boris Johnson and communities secretary Eric Pickles.
Willmott Dixon will be responsible for the creation of 11 tower blocks ranging from seven to 17 storeys along the Lionel Road South brownfield site. Once Brentford's relocation is complete the company will also build houses on Griffin Park. The landmark deal is being regarded as a significant milestone for Willmott Dixon and officials have already spoke of their excitement at getting this project off the ground.
Andrew Telfer, divisional chief executive at Willmott Dixon Regen, said: “We’re delighted that Brentford Football Club has chosen us as preferred bidder and are looking forward to working with the club to take forward these exciting plans that will deliver a fantastic new stadium and new homes in a superb and desirable location close to good transport links.
"Willmott Dixon also shares a strong commitment with Brentford FC that our work should enhance the surrounding community."
Griffin Park has been home to Brentford since 1904 and has previously held Chelsea FC reserve matches as well as playing host to London Broncos rugby league team from 2002 to 2006. The club, which is currently flying high in League One, believe that a move to a new stadium will help it compete with the bigger teams in the Football League should they gain promotion.
