Acoustic fencing may be required in north Somerset if council plans to reopen a Bristol railway line get the go ahead.
North Somerset Council has applied for £43 million of government money to help relaunch the Portishead railway link, which is currently only used for freight movement.
If successful, work could commence on making necessary repairs and see the rail link reopen in 2015, providing another much-needed transport link.
Deputy leader of North Somerset Council, councillor Elfan Ap Rees, told thisissomerset.co.uk that the service could operate every 30 minutes at rush hour.
He added: "There is considerable local and West of England support for re-establishing a Portishead rail link into Bristol and this project would dramatically reduce travel times, with a train journey time of just 17 minutes between Portishead and Bristol Temple Meads."
The line was closed to passenger trains in 1964 and freight in 1981, but reopened in the 1990s for freight use only.
