Security measures - including high security fencing - will be ramped up in Burton town centre ahead of this evening's (June 18th) England game.

The town is preparing for an influx of revellers for the World Cup match between England and Algeria.

According to the Burton Mail, the increased security is a pre-emptive measure and is part of a direct response to the recent high-profile violence in the town's centre.

It noted that, as well as high security fencing, there was an increased police presence during England's ill-fated match against the USA on Saturday June 12th.

Staffordshire Police's assistant chief constable Jane Sawyers told the news provider: "Residents and town centre visitors can be reassured that there will be high-visibility patrols on match days, and enough officers to deal with any problems."

Meanwhile, Tony Plant, manager of Goodridge, a pub in the town centre, told the paper that his decision to use metal detectors was part of an ongoing partnership with the authorities.
