Glasgow will be home to a new major waste processing plant after developers announced the chosen contractor which will be given the task of constructing the facility.
Interserve has been named as the company that will build the recycling development following an announcement from the city council stating that it had reached a deal with specialist firm Viridor Ltd for a 25-year commitment to the site. The business, which is a subsidiary of the Pennon Group, will provide a capital investment of £160 million to the project which will see the company design, build, finance and operate the facility. Viridor has recruited Interserve to construct recycling and energy from waste plants as part of the agreement reached by both parties.
Officials noted that the contract will mean that around 175,000 to 200,000 tonnes of waste needs to be treated every year and it is designed to reach a 90 per cent rate of landfill diversion. It falls in line with Scotland's continued efforts to become more energy-efficient as the number of wind, wave and solar projects continues to grow across the country. Europe's largest wind farm is currently situated on Eaglesham Moor just a mere 20 miles from the centre of Glasgow and encompasses 140 turbines with the capability of producing 322 megawatts of power.
The recycling plant is just another cog to put plans in motion to help Scotland reduce its dependency on carbon-based fuels and also reduce the amount of emissions it produces every year. The new Glasgow Centre will include a range of high-tech facilities in terms of recycling, anaerobic digestion and energy recovery by gasification which officials hope will help Scotland's second city bring down the amount of carbon dioxide it pumps into the atmosphere on a yearly basis.
Viridor stated that it is to submit a planning application by the end of this summer with approval hopefully granted by 2013.
Colin Drummond, chief executive of Viridor, said: "The new plants will have a combined gross electrical power generation capacity of 15 megawatts and Viridor will work with its partner, Glasgow City Council, to maximise heat recovery opportunities. The plants are due to come on stream in early 2016."
