Birmingham City Council was condemned for failing to erect an appropriate high security fencing solution during last year's Christmas lights switch-on, it has been reported.

Low quality high security fencing was blamed for a disaster which ensued during pop band JLS's performance at the city's Millennium Point at the event, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Birmingham City Council came under fire immediately after the disaster, which injured as many as 60 people.

As many as 30,000 people turned up at the temporary venue, which was designed for a capacity of just 13,000.

However, according to independent health and safety consultancy Confluence, the pre-planning for the show was satisfactory, the paper states.

"We would recommend that in future, any such events have primary and secondary controlled access points so that crowds can be stopped further from the venue," the report stated.

The cost of the G20 high security fencing in Toronto was more than double the original estimate as plans were adapted as the event approached.ADNFCR-3337-ID-19882315-ADNFCR
