The dangers of purposely damaging security fencing and leaving it in a state of disrepair has been underscored after five horses exploited a cut hole in security fencing and escaped into a nearby residential site.

According to the St Albans and Harpenden Review, police are now looking for the person who deliberately cut a hole through the fence close to Danesbury Park in Welwyn.

It is believed that a female dog walker was spotted cutting the fence on a previous occasion.

PC Ben Satchfield, from the Welwyn Rural neighbourhood team, told the newspaper: "I want to let the offenders know how dangerous this could have been. They could have run across a road causing a vehicle to swerve or crashed into a vehicle. Equally they could be a danger to pedestrians if they are scared, and at the very least they could cause damage to residents’ property."

He also said this was the latest in a number of dangerous incidents of horses escaping through cut security fencing.

This month the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued an alert for sites to ensure that security fencing is in good working order.
