New sports netting will be required in the Portsmouth area before next year's 2012 Olympics after plans for a new leisure centre in Gosport were given the go-ahead.

Redevelopment work will start next month on the Holbrook Recreation Centre after Gosport Borough Council said that it could get underway.

Portsmouth.co.uk reports that the project will cost around £6 million, with the old building facing demolition before a new one is constructed.

Councillor Mark Hook, leader of the council, told the news provider that he is "delighted" that work will start in September.

He said: "We have been working hard with DC Leisure to get the optimum deal that we could with the maximum facilities. We have always been consistent with that date.

"We have always said it will be up and running for the summer Olympics in 2012 which is now less than a year away."

It comes after Medway Park in Gillingham, a new leisure centre, was opened by Princess Anne last week.
