A community has allayed safety concerns after a pedestrian guardrail was erected near a busy carriageway.

Fencing separating the Hedworth Estate in Jarrow, south Tyneside, and the A19 road, had fallen into disrepair and misuse over the years, concerning local residents.

Fly tipping is common and youngsters have been breaking through the fencing, the news provider said.

There were also serious concerns children may get through the fence and head onto the busy road.

After a long campaign the residents association secured £25,000 to erect new security fencing.

Now, new 6ft high steel fencing has been erected to improve the situation.

Chairman of the residents' association, Linda Hemmer, noted the benefit the security fencing had.

She said: "In the months since the fence was put up there has been less rubbish around the fencing and no complaints of people using the area as a walkthrough to the Asda store across the A19.

"There have also been no reports from the police about youths gathering there at night. It really has helped to make the estate a safer place to live."

Last month an inquest said crash barriers on a busy road could have saved the life of a driver, had they been in place.
