Many households employ security precautions, but they don't always think through the ways in which they are implementing them, it has been suggested.
"Is there a wheelie bin by the fence, so that a burglar could jump over the fence?", asks Jonathan Lim, security expert at Friedland.
"Have you made sure that all of your windows and doors are shut when you leave home? It doesn't have to be expensive or difficult – just don't make it easy for burglars," he said.
Mr Lim's comments come after research from Friedland showed that 59 per cent of UK properties do not have a security alarm, and, over the past 12 months, 20 per cent of people have left the windows open accidentally when they have gone out.
For Jacqui Hames, the former Crimewatch presenter, homeowners should look at their properties from the perspective of a burglar to better see how it might be exploited.
"Before you leave your home to go to work in the morning or out in the evening, just take a minute to make sure that you have done everything you can to make your home secure before you leave it," she said.
