Ikea has unveiled plans for a new major store due to be built in the Sheffield area at a cost of £60 million.
The Swedish home furnishing company is aiming to expand its number of outlets across the UK and the South Yorkshire development will be situated in the east end of the city near to the Meadowhall retail park. The 370,000 sq ft shop will take the place of the old Betafence facility situated on the Tinsley Wire site and officials stated that plans will be submitted over the coming months after a public consultation has taken place.
If proposals are approved it is estimated that around 200 construction jobs will be created and sustained over the course of its creation. Ikea stated that it had been looking for a site in South Yorkshire that was "large enough" for a number of years and this location represented the best place in which it could target its customers. Sitting alongside the Meadowhall development it will give consumers a 'one-stop shop' for all their needs.
The plans have been met with universal approval from shoppers in the Sheffield area with some saying that it is "about time" that the Swedish company set up a major store near to the South Yorkshire city. The Star spoke to a number of consumers who praised the decision to bring an Ikea to the region.
Rory Dixon, a pharmacy assistant from Stannington, told the newspaper: "It’s a really good idea because at the moment you’ve got to go to Leeds or Nottingham to shop at Ikea. Like everyone else I’m very careful with what I spend at the minute, and Ikea has good prices and good styles.”
Ian Nicholson, Ikea's Sheffield project manager, also spoke of the company's excitement at being able to bring a new premises to the area and that it has been looking to invest in the city for a number of years. He believes that the store will provide a major boost for Sheffield and the wider area.
