Users of a bridge in Weymouth could be at risk now metal railings have been removed from the structure.
The footbridge at Newton's Cove, which links Bincleaves and the Nothe gardens, no longer has some of the stainless steel horizontal railings at either end.
A Dorset County Council spokesman explained: "At present this affects only the end bay where the drop to the ground is relatively low but if the problem persists then the bridge may need to be closed."
Police in the area are now in search of the thieves, reports the Dorset Echo, which may be made easier due to the distinctiveness of the metal railings.
St Nicholas' Church in Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, was recently forced to install a stainless steel roof after thieves stole all the lead from the previous structure.
English Heritage initially opposed the plans due to stainless steel not being a traditional material.
