Metal gates have formed a major part of a significant £400,000 redevelopment project of a canal lock in Stratford.
Alongside metal gates, mechanised rams, sluices, lock landings, system controls and ladders have all been installed so that City Mill Lock can be operational for the first time in 40 years, according to the Newham Recorder.
The opening enables canal boats to get closer to London's Olympic Park as the lock connects the park to the River Lee, and consequently Britain's 4,000 mile canal and river network.
A general upgrading scheme, organised by British Waterways, and of which the lock forms part, has taken place over a 5.5 kilometre area around Olympic Park.
Miles Hubbard, chairman of the Three Mills Mooring Association, told the newspaper: "We are delighted about the opening of City Mill Lock."
A fleet of boats from the Association and St Pancras Cruising Club marked the 40 year gap on Saturday as they became the first public vessels to pass through the lock.
Last month a school in Wigan installed metal gates and security fencing after a long campaign.
