A cash point that was ram-raided in Backwell, North Somerset, needs to be re-installed complete with new security measures, according to community leaders in the town.

Vandals trashed the cash machine, on Rodney Road, over the New Year and now residents want it replaced but with stronger prevention systems such as security bollards and lights.

Backwell's cash point met the same fate as a machine did in Masham, West Yorkshire, when thieves smashed through bollards in a stolen JCB to take the system.

The ATM now needs to be replaced as the nearest 24-hour machine is in Nailsea and Yatton and shop owners claim that it is driving down business.

Bob Taylor, Backwell Parish Council chairman, told the Bristol Evening Post: "The ATM was put in the pod but the only thing that lit up was the small screen above the cash dispenser and not the lights on the top and there were no bollards and no security camera."
