Reading Borough Council is being urged by a Liberal Democrat candidate to install metal railings around Tilehurst library.

Meri O'Connell believes the fencing should be put up around the popular building to prevent children running into the road and being hit by an oncoming car

She presented a petition before the council at a meeting and claimed that she had witnessed a child "charge headlong into the busy road".

While the Reading authority recognised Ms O'Connell's concerns it believed that the level of safety in the area was not as bad as thought.

Tony Page, the council’s lead councillor for regeneration, transport and planning said: "We have no evidence to suggest that this is a problem area, but as we are already considering safety-related improvements in Tilehurst within the traffic management measures initiative."

Tilehurst is one of a host of libraries in Reading and has been at the heart of the community since 1960.
