A school in Stapenhill will build steel gates and security fencing if a £370,000 planning extension is granted.
According to the Burton Mail, East Staffordshire Borough Council has received plans from Edge Hill Junior School to make significant changes to its site.
Alongside the installation of school fencing and gates, Staffordshire County Council wants to demolish a mobile classroom block, install tarmac surfacing and remove an existing fire escape as part of the extension, which will provide an extra 174 square metres of space.
Lynsey Palmer, from Staffordshire County Council’s planning department, told the news provider that the mobile classrooms didn't hold toilers and infringed on play area space.
"As a consequence, external play is constrained due to the reduction in space and children lose lesson time to use toilets in the main building.
"Crossing the playground also requires risk assessment as the site is not totally secure, being open to the playing field," she said.
The Primary Capital Programme has funded the proposed development.
Opened in 1959, the school has 16 classrooms, resource rooms and an ICT suite.
