Security bollards in a coastal town centre have been given a fresh new lick of paint as part of a general makeover in the town centre.
In preparation for the summer season of events and activities, when thousands of visitors flock to the seaside town of South Shields, councillors have invested time and money in transforming the centre anew.
Other street furniture, including bike stands, tree grilles, seating and lampposts, have been given the glossy treatment and now look fabulous in black and gold.
Councillor Allan West, chairman of the Riverside community area forum, said: "The attractive appearance of our main shopping area and the popular Market Place is important to give visitors and regular shoppers a good impression."
Other initiatives have included power-washing pavements in King Street and the Market Place.
Also, a new set of signs has gone up to help visitors find their way around the town centre as well as providing valuable directions for getting onto the scenic seafront.
In neighbouring Sunderland, a councillor has expressed his disappointment at the council for scrapping what he saw as essential barriers to abuses of a street in the city.
