High security fencing has been erected around a building site in Sacriston, near Durham, which will be home to a new Tesco.

The area was fenced off last week after planning permission was granted for the Tesco Express development near the town's cricket ground.

Planning experts from Durham County Council approved the development, which is on the site of a former church hall in Front Street.

According to The Journal, the redevelopment of the site will involve the relocation of a war memorial.

Commenting on the removal of the monument, Durham County Council's regeneration officer Karen Gibson said: "We know this is a really sensitive subject and we want everyone to feel that moving the memorial is handled with care and respect."

Recently, the Health and Safety Executive called on construction firms to ensure their high security fencing provides an effective barrier against children.ADNFCR-3337-ID-800036098-ADNFCR
